Project Title: Fire Victims Relief Operation Date: August 22, 2024 Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PMVenue: Old Alima Barangay Hall, Tramo St., Alima, Bacoor, CaviteBeneficiaries: 162 FamiliesVolunteers: 10Local Stakeholders: N/A Project Description: In response to a devastating fire incident that displaced 162 families in Alima, Bacoor, our club organized a Relief Operation to support affected households in their time of need. Essential goods such as food items and home necessities were distributed during the event, which was conducted in partnership with Congresswoman Lani Revilla, who extended her support and presence during the outreach. This humanitarian effort aimed not only to provide immediate relief but also to extend compassion and solidarity to women and families who experienced sudden loss and displacement. Through this project, Zonta Club reaffirmed its commitment to community responsiveness and supporting women and families in crisis situations. When disasters like typhoons strike, women and girls are often disproportionately affected—facing increased risks of displacement, violence, and loss of livelihoods. This is due to: 1. Increased Risks of Displacement Women and girls are particularly vulnerable during disasters, often facing higher rates of displacement. As one example, during Super Typhoon Yolanda, women and girls made up a significant portion of the displaced population, highlighting their increased vulnerability in such scenarios (source). 2. Heightened Exposure to Violence Research indicates that disasters can lead to a rise in gender-based violence (GBV). The systematic review on natural hazards and violence against women and girls found that stressors associated with disasters, such as loss of housing and social support, contribute to an increase in violence, including intimate partner violence and sexual assault (source). Reports from various disasters, including the 2010 Haiti earthquake, documented significant spikes in GBV, demonstrating that chaotic environments can exacerbate pre-existing vulnerabilities (source, source). 3. Loss of Livelihoods Women often bear the brunt of economic impacts during disasters due to existing gender inequalities. A study indicated that women are 14 times more likely than men to die in disasters, which correlates with their lower socioeconomic status and limited access to resources, further jeopardizing their livelihoods (source). 4. Cumulative Impact of Gender Inequality The underlying structural inequalities that women and girls face—such as limited access to education, healthcare, and decision-making—are exacerbated during disasters. This makes recovery more challenging for them, as they may lack the necessary resources and support systems to rebuild their lives (source, source, source). Because of these factors, typhoon relief is one of the core pillars of our efforts at Zonta Greater Rizal II. This is why, last July, we led a relief good distribution mission, in order to do our part in alleviating the immediate needs of some of those affected by the massive typhoon. Project Title: Zonta Cares: Carina Relief Operation Date: August 5, 2024 Time: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PMVenue: Various Locations, Quezon CityNumber of Beneficiaries: 300 FamiliesNumber of Volunteers: 3Classification of Recipients: FamiliesLocal Stakeholders: N/A Project Description: In response to the devastation caused by Typhoon Carina, our club led a coordinated relief operation under the banner of “Zonta Cares.” Contributions from Zonta clubs across the district were pooled to purchase sacks of rice, 100 bottles of liquid chlorine, and 100 units of all-purpose cleaner to support affected families. On August 5, 2024, these relief goods were distributed to 300 families in four severely affected areas in Quezon City, namely: Rona’s Garden, Loyola Quirino 2-C Barangay Hall Obrero Street, Bagumbayan East Kamias Barangay Hall This initiative aimed to provide not only food relief but also essential hygiene supplies to help ensure clean water and safe living conditions in the aftermath of the typhoon. The project is a testament to Zonta’s mission of service, solidarity, and swift response in times of crisis. Project Title: Appreciation Night and Induction Ceremony Description: A heartfelt Thanksgiving and Welcome Event was held to honor the outgoing President and to formally induct the incoming President into office. The event served as both a moment of reflection and a celebration of continuity in leadership. It was graced by 8 dignitaries and 4 Presidents from fellow Zonta clubs, making it a meaningful evening of recognition, gratitude, and camaraderie within the Zonta community.
